Noodletown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Part of what I\u2019m calling the \u201cGolden Oldies\u201d series: photos I had posted on Instagram in bygone days that surely belong here as well, from restaurants that are still doing business, still relevant, and still worth a trip.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A fixture in Manhattan\u2019s Chinatown, Great N.Y. Noodletown, 28 Bowery at the corner of Bayard St, is an absolute must-do (and you know I seldom say that) for two of their signature dishes in particular:<\/p>\n<p><em>(Click on any image to view it in high resolution.)<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6091-edited.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6091-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6091-edited.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6091-edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6091-edited-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6091-edited-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6091-edited-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cSalt baked\u201d (read \u201cdelicately fried\u201d) menu items like shrimp, scallops, squid, a couple of kinds of fish, eggplant and bean curd, pork chops, etc. are certainly excellent, but Great NY Noodletown is justifiably famous for their mind blowing (and you know I seldom say that either) Salt Baked Soft Shell Crabs. Of course, their eponymous homemade noodles are delightful as are so many of the other dishes they offer, but these are hands down (claws down?) the best soft shell crabs you will ever eat, the standard to which you will hold all other soft shell crabs henceforth and forever. Get \u2019em while they\u2019re in season. Two orders on this plate, two crabs to an order, and trust me, you won\u2019t want to share.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6105-cropped-edited.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6105-cropped-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6105-cropped-edited.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6105-cropped-edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6105-cropped-edited-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6105-cropped-edited-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_6105-cropped-edited-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nExtreme closeup: plump and delicious! And yes, they were <em>all <\/em>like that.<\/p>\n<p>As to the other notable entry, you\u2019ve probably gazed at the awesome roasted\/BBQ meats (and sometimes cuttlefish if you\u2019re lucky) hanging in the windows at Cantonese restaurants: roast pork, roast pig, roast duck, and so many more. The collective term for these favorites is siu mei (\u71d2\u5473), not to be confused with the popular dim sum dumpling, shu mai (\u71d2\u8ce3).
