{"id":14828,"date":"2021-08-18T14:34:28","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T18:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/?p=14828"},"modified":"2021-08-18T14:34:28","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T18:34:28","slug":"a-fish-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/?p=14828","title":{"rendered":"A Fish Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re wandering around Greenpoint in Brooklyn searching for Polish and Eastern European goodies, you\u2019ve probably covered the relevant sections of Manhattan and Nassau Avenues \u2013 but you may not know about AS Warehouse at 276 McGuinness Blvd because it\u2019s somewhat isolated, about a block off the beaten path. \u201cWarehouse\u201d describes the physical plant pretty accurately: the place is huge and is anything but welcoming. In all cases, the filets were very yielding and a little fishy \u2013 which is to say that they\u2019re not the sweet Vita herring filets in wine sauce that you might know from the refrigerator aisle in the supermarket. (Note that sugar is the fourth ingredient on the label but you couldn\u2019t prove it by me.) The oil was slightly spicy; the onions weren\u2019t especially sharp but they did provide a welcome foil to the modest heat, not to mention the overall texture. So I gave a nod to presentation in this round. I had to do something to the fish itself. I decided to pull out all the stops (corks?) with this one and go for flavor as well as presentation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5266-edited-1440.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5266-edited-1440.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14842\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5266-edited-1440.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5266-edited-1440-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5266-edited-1440-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5266-edited-1440-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_5266-edited-1440-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUnsurprisingly, the unadorned herring was like its mates, so I blended mustard, horseradish, and onion plus capers and scallion for the flavor component, and plated it with Swedish crisp bread and Danish butter, along with thinly sliced cucumber.<\/p>\n<p>Finally got a satisfying lunch out of the expedition.<\/p>\n<p>That bit of garnish in the middle was the kicker though: baby coriander seed fresh out of the garden that played perfectly with the Eastern European themed fish. I had never even seen it IRL, let alone worked with it, but it looked pretty and tasted just right in this context.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t ask me how I came by it.
