Paradise Sweets, the Middle Eastern bakery at 6739 5th Ave in Brooklyn, was offering three kinds the day I stopped by: clockwise from left, pistachio, walnut and date.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3681-edited-1440.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3681-edited-1440.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1440\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13924\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3681-edited-1440.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3681-edited-1440-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3681-edited-1440-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3681-edited-1440-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3681-edited-1440-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCan a cookie actually melt in your mouth? These were wonderfully fragile, disintegrating into a crumbly powder like a Mexican polvoron: you\u2019ll start with a bite, but you\u2019ll want to finish with a spoon. For those who don\u2019t care for uber-sugary cookies, the good news is that this version is not especially sweet; I discovered that the flavor seems to blossom in the company of a hot beverage \u2013 tea or Arabic coffee would be perfect.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3693-edited-1440.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3693-edited-1440.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1440\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3693-edited-1440.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3693-edited-1440-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3693-edited-1440-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3693-edited-1440-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_3693-edited-1440-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSome of the smaller markets along the way were offering prepackaged ma\u2019amoul like this one from P\u00e2tisserie Safa, a Montreal based company. They start out with a batter akin to that of pancakes but they\u2019re griddled on only one side, then they&#8217;re filled with white cheese or nuts, folded into a crescent, fried or baked, and soaked in sweet rose water syrup.
