(Check out full coverage and a description of a recent event <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/?page_id=2550\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.) Aside from the fact that it affords the chance to hob and nob with other professional foodies, see what products and brands are trending and poised to make a breakthrough, and get a sense of what the industry thinks the marketplace is craving, it gives me the opportunity to turn you on to new products to watch for locally or even order online.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few of the exhibitors who featured ethnic ice cream at last year&#8217;s event.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Japan:<\/strong><\/em> Mochi is a traditional Japanese food originally made from short grain glutinous rice that\u2019s pounded and molded, often into chewy flattened orbs. Frequently a confectionary, its sphere of influence has extended far beyond the perimeter of its source. A new version was created about 35 years ago that wraps mochi dough around ice cream. This contemporary edition, technically called mochi ice cream, has become so popular that it\u2019s often simply referred to as mochi.<\/p>\n<p>Several companies displayed their renditions at the convention including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrmochi.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Mochi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mochicream.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mochi Cream<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mymomochi.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">My\/Mo<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/Bubbies\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bubbiesicecream.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bubbies<\/a><\/a>, a Hawaiian contender. Flavors ranged from red bean, green tea, black sesame, and lychee to Kona coffee, chocolate peanut butter, and mango along with the more routine vanilla and strawberry among others. Note that in some cases, the ice cream core carries the flavor unassisted by the somewhat neutral mochi coating, but sometimes the doughy wrapper is infused as well and further enhances the experience. Look for these and other brands in Asian markets, particularly those that highlight Japanese goods. And while you\u2019re there, take note of the seemingly infinite array of Japanese and Korean pops, bars, and ice cream novelties as well (melon is a popular flavor).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5217-1080.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5217-1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5217-1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5217-1080-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5217-1080-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5217-1080-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5217-1080-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5233-1080.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5233-1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" class=\"alignnone p-image-6107\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5972-1080.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5972-1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5972-1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5972-1080-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5972-1080-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5972-1080-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_5972-1080-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Korea:<\/strong><\/em> In terms of world flavors of American style ice cream, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noonasicecream.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Noona\u2019s<\/a>, (noona means &#8220;big sister&#8221; in Korean) exhibited heritage flavors like toasted rice, golden sesame, black sesame, turmeric honeycomb and green tea.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Latvia<\/strong><\/em> was at the Fancy Food Show as well making a push to pop into the American marketplace with at least <a href=\"https:\/\/foodunion.com\/brands\/our-ice-cream-brands\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">four brands of Latvian ice cream <\/a>available in tubs, cones, pops, and bars with intriguing varieties like orange &#038; macarons, raspberry-pomegranate, and black balsam &#038; blackcurrant (shown here). In addition to ice cream, the Latvian company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spekabar.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Speka<\/a> offered several varieties of curd snacks. Curd snacks are not unlike a cross between an Eskimo pie and chocolate covered cheesecake; individually wrapped, they come in an assortment of flavors from chocolate and vanilla to the more esoteric blueberry, blackberry, and raisin.
