{"id":8910,"date":"2019-06-18T18:19:20","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T22:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/?p=8910"},"modified":"2019-06-18T18:19:20","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T22:19:20","slug":"chao-thai-grilled-sausages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/?p=8910","title":{"rendered":"Chao Thai &#8211; Grilled Sausages"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Instagram Post 6\/18\/2019<\/h4>\n<p>So since I was in Elmhurst, I went to Chao Thai, the tiny Thai restaurant at 85-03 Whitney Ave. Just for kicks, I ordered the two grilled pork sausages offered on their appetizers menu: Northern Thai Sausage (A21) and E-San Thai Sausage (A22) with an eye toward delineating a simple distinction between the two for anyone curious. Both come with lettuce, sliced onion, shredded ginger, and the slender Thai peppers often called bird\u2019s eye chilies.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Click on any image to view it in high resolution.)<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KZHY6210.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KZHY6210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1440\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KZHY6210.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KZHY6210-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KZHY6210-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KZHY6210-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KZHY6210-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a>They\u2019re very different, of course: Northern Thai Sausage (\u0e44\u0e2a\u0e49\u0e2d\u0e31\u0e48\u0e27), transliterated as \u201csai oua\u201d and similar variants, highlights spicy notes of red curry paste.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KFKI0364.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KFKI0364.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1440\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KFKI0364.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KFKI0364-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KFKI0364-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KFKI0364-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ethnojunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/KFKI0364-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nE-San Thai Sausage, (E-San refers to Northeastern Thailand and also sports many spellings like \u201cIsan\u201d) is called \u201csai krok Isan\u201d (\u0e44\u0e2a\u0e49\u0e01\u0e23\u0e2d\u0e01\u0e2d\u0e35\u0e2a\u0e32\u0e19) and can be distinguished by its fermented flavor profile.<\/p>\n<p>My understanding is that \u201csai\u201d which appears in both names, among its many definitions means intestine in this case \u2013 or casing if you prefer \ud83d\ude09.<\/p>\n<p>Which is better?
